More Day to Dawn

Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star.

Walden, Henry David Thoreau

This unit asks students to contemplate the writing of Henry David Thoreau as a naturalist (Walden), as a social critic ("Civil Disobedience"), and as a philosopher/spiritual being ("Walking"). Along the way they will consider whether they agree with Thoreau. They will connect 19th-century Transcendentalism with 21st-century beliefs and practices. And they will have an opportunity to nominate a modern-day Thoreau for the More Day to Dawn award.
